allow yourself to feel

I had a funny experience today. And by funny I mean literally. :) I’m not sure how many of you have seen the movie, Wonderboys but it would certainly rank high up on as one of my favourite movies. There’s just something about it that hits me the right way; it’s certainly nowhere near your traditional comedy but there are few movies that can so reliably make me laugh like this one. There’s one scene in particular - a very short-lived rescue attempt by Robert Downey Jr to save Michael Douglas from gunpoint which has made me belly laugh every single time I have seen it (I think I might have been the only one in the theatre to be laughing hysterically the first time I saw it). I recently bought the movie; I figured it was a good one to have in my arsenal and I stuck it in this morning. Sure enough, I was laughing and giggling in the preceding scenes and then I just lose it when the car crashes and the paper spills out into the air. I can’t remember the last time I laughed like this, where, for a time, it filled all of me from head to toe to mind to body to soul. A laugh that, for a minute, even grief could not intrude upon. How wonderful.

This evening we went out to an incredible slide/media show put on by the very talented William Jans called Trekking in Tibet. He puts on a powerful and interesting show that is also very engaging and I’d recommend that you sign up on his web site to be notified the next time he brings one of his shows to town - I’ll certainly be going back. Great traveling stories. Beautiful photography. Amusing anecdotes and movies. Spoken of Tibet (although I think it speaks to photography in general or perhaps even of life as a whole) he said, “It’s not what you see but what you allow yourself to feel”. I’ll remember those words for a long time.
