u2 hall of fame

So, as of tonight, we no longer live in a world where U2 is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, hey, doesn’t it feel great? And so, in a small tribute to that fact and because he started it and she changed the rules, I’m going to change the rules some more and say that these are my top 5 most emotional U2 songs. I’m not saying sad although that may, at times, be the case but my criteria here is emotional.

1. Kite I very frequently get misty listening to this song. Sometimes I have to *not* listen to the words in order to get through it. For those that we lose along the way.

2. Sunday Bloody Sunday Often misunderstood, one might gain a clue by listening to the version on the Rattle and Hum DVD. It’s U2 at their most emotional, most angry and most heartbroken.

3. Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own May also make it into the top 5 longest-U2-title category. Honestly being such a young U2 song I hesitate to put this up here but I feel that it’s youth doesn’t diminish its power. Many U2 songs hide their message in Bono’s wicked lyrics so it took me aback to find so many literal statements in one of their songs. You don’t need to look for the hidden meaning because there isn’t one. So on their sleeves.

4. Running to Stand Still One might call this horrifically dark and it gets some bonus points for having special meaning to me. For those that have hit bottom and look up.

5. All I Want is You Listen to the song. Listen to the song a million times. Think you’ve got it. Watch the video with the midget. Have the song transform in your mind to something else entirely.

6. Bad If they discover immortality and I am listening to this song at the end of time then it will still make me think of that one night, the view, and the darkness. Major bonus points for encapsulating one of the more difficult times of my life.

And, hey, isn’t having 6 on our top 5 lists part of the rules as well?
